What to Expect

Starting counselling can feel like a big step. Many people contact me feeling nervous, unsure what to expect, or worried about whether counselling is right for them. My aim is to make the process as comfortable and straightforward as possible.

Getting in Touch

You can contact me by completing the online enquiry form, emailing me directly at jane.harper@renewedperspective.co.uk, or sending a WhatsApp message 07990 989 799.

I aim to respond to all enquiries within 24 hours during weekdays.

If you would like to discuss counselling before committing to a session, I am happy to arrange a free introductory telephone call. This gives us an opportunity to talk about what has brought you to counselling, answer any questions you may have, and decide whether I am the right counsellor for you.

Finding the right counsellor is important, and there is no obligation to book further sessions.

Your First Session

The first session is an opportunity for us to get to know each other.

We'll discuss:

  • What has brought you to counselling

  • What you would like help with

  • Any relevant background information

  • What you hope to achieve through counselling

  • Any questions or concerns you may have

There is no pressure to share everything immediately. We work at a pace that feels comfortable for you.

What Happens During Counselling?

Every person is different, and counselling is tailored to your individual needs. Sessions provide a confidential and non-judgemental space where you can explore your thoughts, feelings and experiences. Some sessions may focus on current difficulties, while others may explore past experiences, patterns of behaviour, relationships or emotions that continue to affect you today.

There is no expectation that you arrive knowing exactly what you want to talk about. Many clients begin with a general feeling that something isn't quite right, and together we gradually make sense of what is happening.

How Often Will We Meet?

Most clients attend weekly sessions, particularly at the beginning of counselling. Some clients choose fortnightly sessions once they feel established in the process. We will discuss together what feels most appropriate for your circumstances and goals.

There is no fixed number of sessions. Some clients find that 6-12 sessions helps them work through a specific issue. Others choose longer-term counselling to explore deeper patterns, relationships or life experiences. Counselling is always reviewed collaboratively and you remain in control of how long you continue.

How Couples Counselling Works

Relationship difficulties can leave both partners feeling unheard, misunderstood and disconnected. My role is not to decide who is right or wrong, nor to take sides. I provide a safe and balanced space where both individuals can be heard, understood and supported in exploring the difficulties within the relationship.

Before We Begin

Prior to our first joint session, I arrange a brief individual conversation with each partner. This allows each person to discuss their concerns privately, ask questions and provide background information about the relationship. These conversations help me understand the relationship dynamics and ensure that both partners feel able to engage safely in the counselling process.

Joint Sessions

During sessions, we explore:

  • Communication difficulties

  • Conflict and recurring arguments

  • Trust issues

  • Emotional disconnection

  • Life transitions and change

  • Intimacy and closeness

  • Different expectations and needs

The focus is on understanding patterns within the relationship rather than assigning blame.

Impartiality

As your counsellor, I remain impartial at all times.

My commitment is to the counselling process and to supporting both individuals equally.

This means creating a balanced environment where each person has the opportunity to express themselves openly and feel heard.

The aim is not to determine a winner or loser, but to help both partners gain greater understanding, improve communication and make informed decisions about the future of their relationship.
